by Media Xpose

Philippus Saayman’s journey into refrigeration and air-conditioning began at Oakdale Agricultural High School, where his passion for technical work was ignited in Agricultural Technology classes. Encouraged by his mother’s reminder of his late grandfather’s career as a refrigeration technician, he embraced the family legacy and pursued this rewarding path.

Winning the “Best in the Nation” medal at WorldSkills Lyon 2024 was both a personal and professional triumph for Saayman. He describes the victory as a culmination of hard work and personal growth, emphasising the validation it provides for his technical skills on the world stage. Saayman’s preparation included two months of intense training under experts at Ifihlile Training Academy, focusing on skill refinement despite limited time. He credits his first journeyman, Martin Share, for shaping his early career and providing invaluable mentorship.

Competing at WorldSkills Lyon presented significant challenges, notably performing under the intense scrutiny of both spectators and experts. However, Saayman embraced the pressure, staying focused to deliver results. Representing South Africa on such a prestigious stage filled him with immense pride, as he proved that the nation’s talent is on par with the best in the world.

Saayman highlights adaptability and creative problem-solving as key skills that set a refrigeration technician apart. He believes the future of the refrigeration and air-conditioning industry will be defined by sustainability and innovation, with a growing focus on energy-efficient solutions and smart technology.

Participation in WorldSkills has bolstered Saayman’s confidence and reaffirmed his commitment to vocational skills. His next steps include completing trade tests in both refrigeration and air-conditioning as well as electrical systems, with a long-term goal of studying engineering to broaden his expertise.

Saayman encourages young South Africans to consider careers in refrigeration, noting the diverse skill set and opportunities for growth it offers. He believes that dedication, continuous learning, and resilience are critical for excelling in international skills competitions like WorldSkills. Through his achievement, Saayman hopes to inspire others in South Africa’s technical and vocational sectors, demonstrating that trades offer not only stability but also the potential for national and international success.

Competitions like WorldSkills, Saayman believes, are instrumental in raising awareness about the global demand for skilled trades and their crucial role in the economy. They showcase the value of specialized skills and open up new career possibilities for aspiring professionals.
