The Fundza Literacy Trust is excited to announce the appointment of Nadeema Musthan as our new Executive Director (ED). Nadeema is the Chairperson of the Literary Association of South Africa (Litasa) and a lecturer at Nelson Mandela University. She has extensive experience in the field of education and a deeply rooted passion for literacy, making her the perfect fit for this important position.
“Nadeema Musthan, as an individual, has dedicated her career to promoting literacy and education in South Africa. She has held several important roles that have developed her skills and expanded her influence in these fields. As a lecturer at Nelson Mandela University, Nadeema has played an integral role in inspiring countless students as their mentor over the last 11 years. Her innovative teaching methods and commitment to academic excellence have earned her recognition and respect within the academic community on multiple occasions,” shares Chase Rhys, Head of Content at the Fundza Literacy Trust.
As an active member of Litasa, Nadeema has made a number of contributions to literacy research and initiatives aimed at at supporting literacy development in the country. Her involvement in Litasa has established her as a strong voice in the field of literacy education.
“In an effort to commemorate Women’s Month this August, we honor the powerful impact of leaders like Nadeema Musthan, whose vision and guidance are steering organizations like Fundza towards a brighter future. Her dedication exemplifies the strength and potential of women in leadership roles, inspiring us all to strive for a more equitable and empowered society. Through her efforts, we are reminded of the crucial role women play in shaping our communities and driving meaningful change,” concludes Rhys.
Throughout her career, Nadeema has focused on developing and implementing strategies to enhance literacy among diverse populations, towards supporting the upliftment of African languages alongside English and Afrikaans. She has presented at numerous conferences, most recently at the Amazwi Children’s Literature Conference 2024. She has never detracted her attention from improving literacy at a community-based level, and was actively involved in the development and improvement of community literacy programs, by working closely with fourteen school communities within the Nelson Mandela Bay area in collaboration with the Centre for the Community School (NMU).
Her insights have assisted local NPOs in promoting reading and writing skills among young learners, with the successful implementation of several grassroots initiatives that have positively impacted a number of under-served communities. These include strategic partnerships with Biblionef and other literacy organisations, such as the Early Childhood Development centers in New Rest and the Skuvelwano Centre in Joe Slovo, which runs a reading club and afterschool programme for members of their youth.
The Fundza Literacy Trust is confident that under Nadeema Musthan’s leadership, the organization will continue to thrive, improve literacy skills, and grow a love for reading in South Africa. This follows the incredible achievements of outgoing ED, Lea-Anne Moses, which the Trust wishes to extend its heartfelt appreciation to, following years of dedicated service to the platform.
