The Class of 2024 at one of Johannesburg’s oldest schools – St Mary’s School Waverley – has delivered extraordinary matric results yet again in the National Senior Certificate exams, upholding its legacy as one of South Africa’s finest academic institutions.

Founded back in 1888, the school is renowned as a leader in 21st century education. Every year, matriculants at St Mary’s achieve top results and go on to conquer the world in whatever discipline they choose, with the Class of 2024 continuing this legacy.

“We couldn’t be prouder of our girls,” said Seipati Shiakallis, Senior School Headmistress. “These results are proof of their grit, determination, and the world class education we champion at St Mary’s”

St Mary’s 2024 academic achievements include:

  • A perfect 100% pass rate, with
  • 99% of candidates achieving results that qualify them to undertake Bachelor’s Degree studies.
  • A total of 394 distinctions were awarded to the Class of 2024 with an average of 4.2 distinctions per candidate.
  • 96% of candidates earned at least one distinction.
  • 41 candidates (44%) scored an average of 80% or higher.
  • 83 candidates (89%) achieved an average of 70% or higher.
  • Strong subject performances include 55 distinctions in English and 38 distinctions in Mathematics.

While academics are important, St Mary’s focus on nurturing well-rounded young women is what sets it apart. This is according to Shiakallis, who believes their legacy is rooted in the belief that success is not only measured by academic performance, but also by the personal growth of learners. This is underpinned by St Mary’s core values and a pastoral care system that supports pupils and provides opportunities to engage with the wider community.

Beyond the classroom, the class of 2024 also excelled in sports, culture and community service:

  • Six girls earned national colours in various sports, proudly representing South Africa in local and international settings.
  • Francesca Lewitton, a national debater, achieved an extraordinary eight distinctions,
  • The Class of 2024 contributed hundreds of hours to service, a fundamental part of the school’s ethos. Many were awarded service honours in recognition of their commitment and selflessness.

“The outstanding 2024 matric results and extra-curricular accomplishments of our girls ensures they leave with a deep sense of purpose and self-worth and are ready to flourish in a world beyond the classroom. As they step into the next chapter of their lives, the class of 2024 should remain confident in their abilities, be brave and embrace new challenges, and always remember the values that have shaped them during their time at St Mary’s,” concludes Shiakallis.
