“President Ramaphosa’s recognition of the ‘missing middle’ in higher education funding is an important step towards creating a more inclusive and equitable education system in South Africa. For too long, students from households considered to be “too rich” to qualify for NSFAS but too “poor” to afford university fees have been left behind.
While the Phase 1 rollout of the comprehensive student funding model is a positive move, with the hopes of reaching approximately 10,000 students in its first year, the need far exceeds this number.
Thousands of capable, driven, investment-worthy students continue to face financial exclusion simply because of their household income bracket or lack of access to information that would connect them to the resources they require.
At Feenix, we see firsthand how financial barriers impact academic performance, mental well-being, and ultimately, the ability to complete a qualification.
We encourage further collaboration between government, the private sector, and civil society to ensure that no student is left behind due to financial constraints. Investing in the education of the missing middle is an investment in the future of South Africa.
I myself was a missing middle student and had it not been for my grandpa standing with me at financial aid and kind staff to educate me on my options, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Thanks to their kindness and proactivity, I have committed my life to paying it forward and assisting other under-resourced students in need.
I am exceptionally fortunate that I get to live out my purpose here at Feenix. As an organisation, We remain committed to being part of the solution and look forward to seeing how this initiative evolves to meet the scale of the challenge.”
