Feenix calls for support in breaking barriers to education this Youth Month

by Tia

South Africa’s youth face a staggering unemployment crisis, with 45.5% of those aged 15-34 jobless in the first quarter of 2024, far outpacing the national average of 32.9%. As of 2023, only 7.3% of South Africans aged 25-64 held a bachelor’s degree, well below the OECD average. The call for accessible higher education, as an onramp into sustainable futures and careers, has never been clearer.

As a commemoration of the young heroes who lost their lives on the streets of Soweto protesting the grievous social injustice of unequal education, the month of June takes on special significance in our country. This Youth Month, Feenix reaffirms its commitment to breaking down financial barriers and empowering students to pursue their dreams.

Feenix is igniting hope and driving change, one educational journey at a time, by connecting determined learners with a supportive donor community. This month they’re inviting all South Africans to join in this transformative journey, supporting students determined to change their lives.

“Youth Month is a reflective time, highlighting the importance of equitable access to higher education in making a lasting impact and building a hope-filled future for all. To do that, we need to nurture the hope and potential of young people, and Feenix is right at the heart of doing that. Feenix operates on the principles of Ubuntu and ‘Community,’ and offers far more than just access to funding,” said Feenix Student Advancement Manager Yanga Totyi.

The exorbitant cost of tertiary education remains an insurmountable barrier for countless families, perpetuating cycles of inequality and hindering social mobility.

“We refuse to accept this disheartening status quo,” Totyi said. “We firmly believe that education should not be dependent on wealth. Our mission is to dismantle financial barriers and provide every young South African with the opportunity to pursue their dreams through higher education.”

Feenix alumni are making significant strides in various sectors, contributing to societal growth and inspiring countless others. Their successes exemplify the profound impact that access to higher education can have, not only on individual lives but also on the broader community.

One remarkable Feenix alumnus, Itumeleng Legoete, completed his law degree debt-free with the support of generous donors through the Feenix platform. Legoete now serves as the Acting District Court Control public prosecutor at the National Prosecuting Authority.

“The objective of my life has always been to make a difference in the lives of other people. Because of the support from family, friends, and Feenix, I am living that dream,” he said.

Another Feenix alumnus, Chadley Smit, said that, “Feenix gave me the opportunity to pursue my dreams when all seemed impossible. With the support I received, I have not only changed my life but am also working to uplift my community. Education truly is the key to unlocking a better future for all of us.”

“I believe in the work that Feenix is doing, and I’m reaching out to you today because I believe that together, we can transform lives and pave the way towards a South Africa where opportunities are abundant, and dreams are within reach,” says Totyi.

Feenix invites all South Africans, especially institutions and the corporate sector, to act today and play a part in driving better employment and financial outcomes for South Africa’s young people.

Your donation, no matter the size, is a powerful catalyst for change, and can provide a beacon of hope for countless young minds yearning for a chance to succeed. Supporting the Feenix cause to invest in a future where our youth can thrive, and can contribute to a stronger more resilient society.
