Eligible learners across the country can now apply for the new ‘Learning Liberated Scholarships & Bursary Programme 2025’

Applications now open until 31 August 2024 – The ‘Learning Liberated Scholarship and Bursary Programme’ provides financial aid in the form of a scholarship or bursary to deserving learners with the support of UCT Online High School’s incredible corporate partners with a goal to extend this support to 1,000 learners by January 2025.

The debut UCT Online High School Learning Liberated Scholarship Programme launched on 31 July 2023 to invest in the education of talented learners from economically disadvantaged families, who demonstrated academic potential, had aspirations for tertiary education, and the intent to make a positive and impactful contribution to the nation.

In a little over four weeks since the launch in 2023, the need for widespread financial support was evidently clear – more than 8,000 families showed interest to see if their family would qualify for the partial Grade 8-11 National Senior Certificate (NSC) scholarships for the January 2024 intake. The programme now supports over 200 learners and this fund provides full or partial financial aid through scholarships or bursaries to deserving learners, both current and prospective.

In January 2024, Sasria SOC LTD and UCT Online High School welcomed a cohort of 100 learners into the Learning Liberated Scholarship and Bursary Programme – with a total investment of approximately R8 million over 5 years.The Sasria UCT Online High School Scholarship is a key component of Sasria’s strategy for value creation. It’s a critical tool for enhancing business, strengthening South Africa’s financial and insurance sectors, and supporting communities. Heartfelt learner testimonials received from the beneficiaries of the scholarship is testament to how meaningful this initiative is to both their academic and personal lives. The learners dedication and passion serve as motivation to the ongoing efforts of expanding quality education to all learners in the country.

In January 2022, Sanlam partnered with UCT Online High School to launch the Learning Liberated Scholarship and Bursary Programme, welcoming the first group of 100 learners – with a total investment of approximately R14 million over 5 years. The Sanlam UCT Online High School Scholarship was designed to equip South Africa with essential skills for the fourth industrial revolution. It aligns with Sanlam’s mission to empower generations of Africans with financial confidence, security, and prosperity. The scholarship is also part of a broader strategy to foster diverse talent pipelines to support South Africa’s financial services sector and other vital industries. Announcing the Learning Liberated Scholarship & Bursary Programme 

This year, UCT Online High School announces the new and more-accessible Learning Liberated Scholarship and Bursary Programme(LLSB) which aims to provides financial aid in the form of a scholarship or bursary to deserving learners with the support of UCT Online High School’s incredible corporate partners with a goal to extend this support to 1,000 learners by January 2025. UCT Online High School is launching the Programme to unleash South Africa’s learning potential. The mission is to make online education as affordable as possible to provide more education opportunities to bright young South Africans. As a result, they are collaborating with Corporate South Africa to make this vision a reality by unlocking the funds to make this possible. 

The Learning Liberated Scholarship Programme has been expanded to include bursaries, making it the Learning Liberated Scholarship and Bursary Programme. UCT Online High School are introducing 1000 partial bursaries that cover 80% of the annual school fees, with parents covering the remaining 20%.

The Learning Liberated Scholarship or Bursary Programme offers partial scholarships or bursaries for a January 2025 start date to make education more accessible to a diverse range of learners who may not afford the full tuition. This approach allows for more efficient distribution of financial aid, supporting a larger number of learners with available funds. Additionally, funding through donations and philanthropy increases support for the programme, as donors can see their tangible impact on multiple learners. Partial scholarships or bursaries also foster a sense of commitment among recipients to maintain academic performance, leading to higher success rates. Furthermore, this financial assistance helps learners and their families manage education costs.

The UCT Online High School Learning Liberated Scholarship & Bursary Programmeapplications are now officially open and will close at midnight on 31 August 20234. All applications will be reviewed for shortlisting by the end of September 2024 with successful recipients notified in early October 2024. These successful recipients will begin their schooling in January 2025 at UCT Online High School. 

Learning Liberated Scholarship & Bursary Eligibility Criteria

In order for a scholarship or bursary applicant to be considered as a UCT Online High School Learning Liberated Scholarship & Bursary Programme candidate, the following eligibility criteria must be met:

  • Applicant must be a South African citizen
  • Applicant must reside in South Africa
  • At least one of the applicant’s parents must be a South African citizen
  • Applicant must be age appropriate for the grades to which they are applying (grades 8-11)
  • Applicant must want to complete the CAPS curriculum resulting in the National Senior Certificate (NSC)
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need (the family household income may not exceed R350,000 per annum or R29,000 per month)
  • Applicants applying for entry into:
    1. Grades 8-10 must obtain a minimum 50% average in both English (Home Language) and Mathematics
    2. Grade 11 must obtain a minimum 50% average in English (Home Language) and 40% average in either Mathematics or Maths Literacy
  • Applicant must have aspirations to pursue a tertiary education and career after school
  • Applicant must have access to stable internet, a laptop or desktop, and a printer
  • Applicant must have a safe learning environment with necessary support from at least 1 adult champion/supervisor

The Matric class of 2023 – for their perseverance and dedication in earning their National Senior Certificate (NSC) with SACAI, our accrediting body, despite the obstacles they encountered. In 2023, over 900 grade 12 learners registered for their final NSC exams, and they’re incredibly proud that three of their learners ranked among the top 12 SACAI learners in South Africa, with Tanya du Toit taking the top spot by achieving 6 distinctions.
